Lip care at home using natural remedies

Lips are what immediately catches our eye when we look at a person. This is a color accent, this is an indicator of health, this is a way to find out what a person’s character is... All these are the reasons why lips should look flawless. How to achieve healthy looking lips?

The skin of the lips is very sensitive and prone to rapid fading, so it is necessary to take care of it every day. It is very easy to damage the skin of your lips, so you should not use just anything: some lipsticks contain substances that can easily upset the delicate balance of this delicate area.

On the other hand, if you want your lips to be healthy and beautiful, but are not ready to overpay for expensive products, there is still a way out. We will tell you what to do and what to use to make your lips truly attractive.

Massage for volume and juiciness of lips

  1. Try regularly massaging your lips with a soft toothbrush. Slow, careful movements will not damage the skin of the lips, but will serve as an excellent cosmetic massage that activates the natural processes of regeneration and hydration. Ideally, it is better to use a separate toothbrush for massage. For thin lip skin, a brush marked SOFT or for children is perfect.

  2. A good idea is to massage your lips every evening before going to bed. To improve blood circulation and restore the natural brightness of the lip border, wet the brush in cold water before massage. Apply a little vegetable oil (shea, almond, avocado, sasanqua, jojoba) to your lips and gently massage your lips with a brush for one minute. This will provide your lips with softness and shine, without taking up any time, effort or money.
  3. Ice is one of the most popular methods to help increase lip volume at home. Massage an ice cube onto your lips and then apply a moisturizer or balm. This cryomassage is an excellent express remedy for giving your lips an appetizing swelling before an important date or photo shoot. Short-term exposure to cold has a shock effect to some extent, which activates all metabolic processes, increases tone, and improves oxygen saturation of skin cells. By regularly performing ice massage, you can make your lips not only more attractive, but also more resistant to external influences. And even in cool weather, without using balm, your lips will shine with health and beauty.

What ideal lips should be like: expert opinion

Elena Vasilyeva graduated from the Moscow Medical Academy. I. M. Sechenov. Has been practicing aesthetic medicine since 1999. In 2007 she founded the Belle Allure beauty institute in Moscow. At one of the congresses in Paris, I heard about threads made of polylactic acid, realized that this new product was a real breakthrough in cosmetology, and got the idea to bring threads to Russia. I signed a contract and became convinced that this drug was absolutely necessary on our Russian market. In 2011, the threads were officially registered in the Russian Federation. At the moment, Elena is the head trainer of thread lifting specialists not only in Russia and the CIS countries, but throughout the world.

Today we decided to talk with Elena Vasilyeva about a topic beloved by many representatives of the fair sex - perfect lips.

– Elena, what are the aesthetic problems associated with lips, and what solutions does your clinic offer?

– I want to say right away that “aesthetic problems” are not always problems. Natural beauty will always be in fashion. Yes, of course, lips can be different, and sometimes girls and women want some changes. But my personal opinion: what is natural is beautiful. Belle Allure Clinic, in addition to all other medical services, also offers cosmetic services related to lip correction. These are thin lips, lip asymmetry, correction of changes acquired with age - when we age, the skin around the lips also changes not for the better, and it is the perioral zone that often reveals our age; volumetric deficiency of one lip in relation to the other - normally, our lower lip should be plumper than the upper lip, by about one third. But sometimes it happens that either they are the same, or, on the contrary, the upper one is larger - this could be a congenital feature or overcorrection with drugs, an incorrectly performed contouring procedure or some kind of surgical intervention, and so on.

– How to choose the right shape and volume if there are indications for correction?

– We all know that there are certain proportions of the face, and based on these proportions, I approach lip correction. Normally, our face is divided into the upper, middle and lower thirds, and these thirds should be approximately the same. As for the lips, this is the lower third of the face. The ideal proportions of the lower third are ⅓ above and ⅔ below the lip line. Before starting the procedure, we make sure to evaluate the proportions of the face using certain lines and points. We draw these lines, show them to the patient and discuss how best to make the lips look harmonious and fit into the face. Sometimes there are requests that you have to refuse - if in the end the required result will look inharmonious. We also focus on the typical parameters of ideal lips. Let's say that the horizontal size of the lips should ideally be in line with the perpendicular from the inner surface of the iris. Therefore, we can round the mouth a little, and it will fit very harmoniously into the facial features. As for the vertical dimensions of the lips, I have already said that this is a ratio of one to two, that is, the lower lip should be the same size as the two upper ones. This is ideal. Also, ideally, the outline should be clear. With age, the contour tends to become blurred, and we may hear complaints about, for example, lipstick bleeding. It is curious that this is not always a problem of age, sometimes it is a problem of profession. Those who speak a lot at work, especially in English, or smoke a lot, develop a so-called purse-string mouth, the contour becomes blurred. We can also help such patients. Another example of ideal lips are the columns of the philtrum - these are two parallel lines that go from the protruding parts of the upper lip to the base of the nose.

The upper and lower lips have anatomically convex areas; they are formed in the womb. Normally, there are three specific points on the upper lip, and two on the lower lip. A striking example of anatomically perfect lips are the lips of Angelina Jolie. She has just all the convex parts that should be on perfect lips.

– Now the main fear of those who dream of enlarging their lips is turning into a “duck” after visiting a cosmetologist. Why can patients still encounter such correction results?

– Lips have several tissue layers. There are often complications when everything seems to have been done correctly, the technique is good, but the gel moves over the upper lip, and such ridges form in the form of a mustache over the upper lip. This suggests that the device was inserted incorrectly; it was inserted very deep into the muscle, because one of the layers of the lips is muscle tissue. And the gel begins to move, because the muscles push it out. And when the gel lies correctly, in the submucosal layer, it looks very beautiful and harmonious.

You also need to pay attention to the blood supply to the lips. This is the most sensitive and most tender part, due to the innervation and blood supply. Certain vessels pass through here, and this is very important for correction in order to avoid any complications. Innervation is the nerve endings that pass here; only a competent specialist knows about their location. With the wrong technique and choice of drug, we can get unwanted complications. We often hear that hyaluronic acid is used to enlarge lips, but it comes in different densities, different viscosities, and different lengths of time spent in tissues. For example, a preparation of one density is used for the contour, but a different density is needed for the lips themselves.

It is also very important to pay attention to the bite when performing lip correction. Sometimes, when there is an incorrect bite or missing teeth, the position of the mouth changes. And there are cases when a patient comes with imperfect lips and the bite is far from ideal, and then correction with filler alone cannot correct the situation.

The position of the mouth is equally important. Which, of course, is different for everyone. If our mouth is located at the same distance from the tip of the nose and chin, then we can easily correct both lips, and our beautiful facial proportions will be preserved, everything will look harmonious. If our mouth is located close to our nose, the distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip is very short, then if we enlarge the upper lip, it will not look good, since the already small distance will be further reduced. In these cases we will work with the entire length of the filtrum columns. And it happens that the mouth, on the contrary, is closer to the chin. As a rule, this is typical for older patients, when all the tissues move downwards. In such cases, we correct the contour of the lower lip, increase the size of the upper lip, and also correct the columns of the philtrum, but not along the entire length, but only the upper part, in order to slightly raise the upper lip, tuck it in and thereby reduce the distance between it and the base of the nose .

– Has the demand for the shape and volume of lips changed in recent years?

– In terms of volume, yes, it has changed. There must be moderation in everything. I believe that the doctor should still reserve the right to explain to the patient what, why and how it is better for him to do or not do it. The patient simply sees beautiful lips, without understanding how all this anatomically happens. And when we tell and explain all this during a consultation, as a rule, most of them agree with the specialist.

– There is an opinion that if you start adjusting the volume of your lips, you will have to do this constantly, because the skin stretches after the procedure. Is it so?

- It is not true. On the contrary, the administration of the drug is additionally caring and moisturizing the skin of the lips. In addition, a specialist will never do much during the initial procedure. Sometimes you have very thin lips and you know you're going to need a lot of filler, but I would never do that in one visit. After all, it is necessary for the drug to settle down, for the patient to get used to it, to see how comfortable he is. And only after a month or two do I invite the patient for a follow-up visit, and we decide whether further enlargement is needed or not. If the patient still wants to increase it further, then the gel is applied to the gel - this is the so-called sandwich effect, and the stated duration of action of the drugs of 9-12 months, as a rule, increases to 2-3 years - we have stimulated the production of our hyaluronic acid so well. True, there are situations when you just want to update your lips a little, revive the red border of your lips. And for this case, there are also drugs that also stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid.

– Can any lips be corrected?

– There are congenital deformities, such as cleft lip, where surgery is required. There are no miracles, but I approach each case individually. And if I understand that I can’t help, then I say so.

– Is it possible to combine lip augmentation with permanent makeup?

– You can combine - and there is no dependence or order here, because the permanent is introduced to higher layers.

– What restrictions exist before and after the procedure?

– We do not give recommendations on preliminary preparation in absentia - this is all discussed during the consultation, because you cannot find out everything about a person over the phone, the exception is if there are some health conditions. After the procedure, you should not drink hot drinks in the first hours; we recommend limiting kissing for three days, active sun and solarium for the first few days.

Regular moisturizing for fresh lips

Saturation with moisture is the key to ensuring that your lips will look young and healthy for many years. Many people mistakenly believe that constant use of lip balm is a proven remedy for maintaining their youth and health. Therefore, apply your favorite balm again and again throughout the day. Still would! After all, without balm, the skin begins to dry out very much and even becomes covered with painful cracks. But it is the regular use of balms that causes a similar, very uncomfortable condition of the skin of the lips.

The balm covers the lips with an oily film, disrupting the normal processes of regeneration and moisture evaporation. Gradually, the skin of the lips becomes like easily damaged parchment. Using lip balm helps temporarily relieve the condition, but after a while it gets worse. The way out of this situation is simple:

  1. For complete care, combine moisturizing and nourishing the skin of your lips. When applying cream to your face, do not forget to apply it in a thin layer to the skin of your lips. But use fatty wax-oil-based balms only as protection before going outside during the cold season.
  2. It may take a couple of weeks to wean your lips from constantly asking for a dose of balm. Vegetable oil of evening primrose will help to significantly ease this period. Primrose oil is rich in vitamin E and gamma-linoleic acid, which help smooth out fine wrinkles, eliminate dryness and inflammation, and quickly heal cracks and irritations. Apply this oil 3-4 times a day on your lips, and in between applications, try not to lick your lips. After a while, you will notice that you begin to forget to apply this oil to your lips, since your lips began to feel great without it.
  3. What is applied to the lips somehow ends up in our body. Therefore, for lip care, choose the most natural products with safe ingredients. The skin around the eyes is similar in structure to the skin of the lips, so you can use the same cream for these areas. SENTIO physiological products are suitable for thin skin around the eyelids and delicate skin on the lips. By purchasing one eye cream from SENTIO, you also purchase a lip care product. This is not only economical, but also ensures that nothing harmful gets into your body.

In what cases should you worry?

You need to start worrying if the labia become red, inflamed, white, dark spots or other pathological lesions appear on them. In this case, you should definitely contact a gynecologist. Melanoma can develop on the genitals - a very malignant tumor, manifested by the appearance of brown or even black spots that quickly increase in size. Therefore, their presence is a reason to contact an oncologist as soon as possible.

In other cases, there is no need to worry. Changing the color of the genitals is a completely normal process that does not indicate any disorder, much less promiscuity.

Regular nutrition for youth and health

By making nourishing lip masks at least a couple of times a week, you can be sure that dullness, loss of volume, vertical wrinkles and other signs of aging will not affect you for many years. You can simply apply a thick layer of rich nourishing cream and blot off the residue with a napkin after 10-15 minutes. Or you can prepare special lip masks with your own hands.

  1. Mix honey with vegetable oil (almond, jojoba, castor, argan, rose hip, avocado, shea) in 1:1 proportions. Apply a thick layer on your lips and leave for a while.

  2. Mix honey with vegetable oil and enrich this composition with a couple of drops of essential oils. Lavender, myrrh, sandalwood, rose, carrot seeds, chamomile - for damage and inflammation. Mint, ginger, cinnamon, lemon balm, lemon - to stimulate blood circulation and give lips brightness and volume. Apply for 10-15 minutes, then remove with a napkin. To enhance the effect, pre-massage your lips with a toothbrush.
  3. Candied honey, applied to the lips with massaging movements, amazingly refreshes the skin of the lips and makes them smooth, shiny and brighter.
  4. Prepare a wonderful mask - a lip scrub with an intoxicating fruity aroma. Mix a quarter teaspoon of unrefined coconut oil with fine brown sugar and add 1 drop of sweet orange essential oil. Apply a thick layer onto your lips, lightly massaging and leave for 15 minutes.
  5. Want to get a natural pink lip color? Pomegranate seeds will help you. Grind the pomegranate seeds and mix them with the heavy cream. Apply the resulting paste to your lips every evening, before going to bed for 15 minutes. Like most natural remedies, this composition works gradually, do not expect instant results. But your patience will be rewarded: you will like the results.
  6. A popular Ayurvedic recipe for adding brightness and volume to lips based on red henna. Brew a pinch of red henna with hot water and mix with coconut oil. Add 1 drop of cinnamon essential oil to the mixture. Gently apply to lips using a brush for 15-20 minutes. The mask slightly stains the lips in a reddish-brick tint, so when applying it, do not go beyond the contour of the lips.

Blue lips as a sign of pathology

An indicator such as lip color says a lot about the state of the body. Normally, the skin of the organ should be slightly pinkish or deep crimson. If the healthy shade disappears and is replaced by a frightening blue, this is a serious cause for concern. Pale lips indicate a deterioration in local blood circulation and a disorder in local metabolism.

In a larger context, such a symptom indicates systemic lesions of the body that disrupt the normal functioning of internal organs. In particular, it is observed in the following pathological conditions.

  1. Iron-deficiency anemia. Characterized by a low level of hemoglobin in the blood. Deficiency is formed as a result of insufficiently balanced nutrition, disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract and injuries that cause severe blood loss. Women with heavy menstruation are also at risk.
  2. Impaired functioning of the cardiovascular system (vascular thrombosis, heart attack, etc.). In these cases, blue lips are usually accompanied by a sharp increase in heart rate and heavy intermittent breathing. Such manifestations require urgent medical attention, as they are fraught with irreversible consequences.
  3. Croup The disease manifests itself mainly in children in infancy and poses a serious threat to health and life. The baby requires urgent hospitalization, as the likelihood of death is very high. In addition to cyanosis, the child has a strong dry cough and signs of suffocation. The main mistake parents make in such cases is to try to eliminate the symptoms on their own. Without qualified medical care, the disease quickly progresses and leads to complications.
  4. Diseases of the respiratory system (pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis). The inflammatory process in the respiratory tract leads to difficulty in assimilation of air, as a result of which the patient develops an acute lack of oxygen. As in the previous case, the correct solution to the problem is to call an ambulance. Treatment with traditional methods for pneumonia and asthma attacks is ineffective.

If you don't know which doctor to contact if signs of cyanosis appear, make an appointment with your primary care physician. After a conversation and examination, the doctor will prescribe treatment or send you to a specialist (cardiologist, pulmonologist, infectious disease specialist).

Exercises for beautiful lip shape

This set of exercises will not take you much time, but will serve as an excellent prevention of age-related changes in the skin of the lips. You can do it in the morning before applying makeup or in the evening before going to bed.

  • Pull your lips out and exhale as if you were blowing out a candle. After exhaling, relax your lips. Repeat 8-10 times.
  • As you inhale, puff out your cheeks and begin to exhale - slowly and evenly, starting to push out the air as you exhale. The eye area should be relaxed. Repeat 8-10 times.
  • Articulating as expressively as possible, pronounce the vowels A, I, O, U, Y. Repeat 10 times.
  • Pull your lips forward as far as possible, opening your mouth slightly. Relax your lips and close your mouth. Repeat 15-20 times.
  • Move your lower jaw left and right along with your lips so that the movement begins from the lips. Repeat 20 times.
  • Stick your tongue out as far forward as possible, hold at the extreme point for a couple of seconds, then retract your tongue and relax your lips. Repeat 5 times.

What measures need to be taken

If blue lips are not caused by hypothermia or vitamin deficiency, you need to visit a doctor to determine its causes. To get started, just make an appointment with a general practitioner or family medicine doctor. The doctor will clarify the nature of the symptoms accompanying cyanosis. Then he will prescribe a series of diagnostic procedures and, if necessary, recommend an examination by a cardiologist, endocrinologist, hematologist or pulmonologist. Typically, for this problem, the following instrumental studies are carried out:

  • biochemical and clinical blood tests;
  • Analysis of urine;
  • Ultrasound of the chest and abdominal organs;
  • MRI;
  • CT with contrast;
  • ECG;
  • EchoCG.

After receiving the diagnostic results, the doctor will be able to determine the factor that provoked the external changes and draw up a treatment plan. Treatment methods are selected taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient and the nature of the identified disease.

At the same time, there are several ways to return your lips to their normal color without medical help. In particular, drinking plenty of hot water helps, increasing blood circulation. Also, the skin begins to look healthier after performing physical activity that stimulates metabolism. As for heavy smokers, they simply need to get rid of the bad habit.

Quitting bad habits to preserve youthful lips

  1. If your lips are dry, get rid of the habit of moisturizing them with your tongue. This will only make the drying worse. Instead, use moisturizer or chapstick.
  2. Do not expose your lips to direct sunlight. Solar radiation dries out the skin of the lips and can even discolor them. Use lip balm with SPF protection.
  3. Alcohol and smoking are bad for skin health, causing dryness and dehydration. The skin of the lips is no exception. Don't forget that to maintain healthy skin you need to drink enough clean water. The norm is at least 1.5-2 liters of water per day. But please note: we are talking about clean drinking water, not tea, coffee or juices.
  4. An unbalanced diet and lack of vitamins in the body can cause unpleasant, long-healing cracks in the corners of the lips. Regularly apply pure shea butter, primrose or rosehip oil to the affected area and follow a diet against dry skin for at least some time.

The ratio of lip volume to other facial parameters

In addition to a sober assessment of the initial structure of the lips, it is important to take into account the overall proportions of the face.

Rhinoplasty surgeons know that the problem of a large nose is not always associated with the true massiveness of its tissues. A prominent nose may be a consequence of chin hypotrophy and distal occlusion.

A similar story with the mouth. The same medium-sized lips will look completely different on a petite heart-shaped face and a full square face. Other parts of the face also play a major role in perception - eyes, nose, cheekbones.

People with the following initial data can safely enlarge their lips:

  • Oval shaped face with regular features
  • Smooth contour of the lower jaw, narrowed downwards
  • High cheekbones
  • Large distance between the philtrum and the tip of the nose
  • Thinness of lips in comparison with other facial features
  • Normal bite

People with the following data should approach lip augmentation with caution

  • Elongated and angular face shape - with the slightest overcorrection there is a risk of getting the rough appearance of a “travesty”
  • Large and bulging eyes - with hypercorrection there is a possibility of becoming like the heroine of a Soviet cartoon about the blue sea
  • Open bite - with overcorrection, the lower part of the face will protrude more forward, which will create something of a “Neanderthal” effect
  • A small face with subtle “doll-like” features - with hyper-correction you will get a caricature, or even “alien” appearance

This does not mean that you should forget about lip shape correction for the listed features. But this means that you should choose a doctor with a developed aesthetic sense and taste, who is interested in the beautiful result of the procedure, and not in selling a large dosage of filler.

Also, do not insist on a specific volume: the cosmetologist can better see what your lips and face as a whole . It is more profitable to come back for correction and add fullness after distribution and “shrinkage” of the drug than to inject hyaluronidase to completely or partially break down the gel.

Hypercorrection?

Cosmetologists often have to be torn between the medical rule “do no harm” and the corporate rule “the client is always right.”

And yet, an honest doctor would rather choose the option of parting with one client than tarnish his reputation. “Duck” lips are the object of mass ridicule and jokes. Online celebrities, who 5-6 years ago promoted their huge lips as an “image feature,” got rid of them surgically. “Experienced” patients in terms of contour plastic surgery are showing more and more caution with the previous requests to “inject the maximum volume.” And cosmetologists who allow hyper-correction create anti-advertising for themselves.

We don't like lips that are enlarged like this:
