How to use toothpaste to cleanse and care for your face: a few little-known life hacks

Surely not everyone knows that toothpaste can be used not only for its intended purpose - to care for teeth and oral cavity. This product may be useful in some other hygiene and cosmetic procedures. For example, to combat problems with the skin of the face and décolleté. But these are very specific techniques, about which many dermatologists speak very negatively. But still, in some cases, small secrets for non-standard use of toothpaste can help solve certain appearance problems.

What substances are undesirable for facial cleansing?

Some active ingredients that may be included in oral care products can be irritating to the skin of the face.

  • If your toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, sodium fluoride, then you should note that these components have an active effect on the skin. Thus, sodium lauryl sulfate is a strong surfactant, triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal substance with a wide spectrum of action, and sodium fluoride is a detergent, that is, an effective cleaning agent. All of them are active skin irritants, the effect of which, if possible, is only short-term and rare.
  • Calcium carbonate, which can also be found in toothpaste, is a natural white food coloring.
  • Zinc has a drying effect on the skin and has an antimicrobial effect.
  • Gel toothpaste contains much more artificial chemical components than thick white toothpaste.

As you can see, you can’t just take the existing toothpaste from the bathroom shelf and try to solve your skin problems with it. First, carefully read its composition and decide for yourself whether it is worth resorting to such help.

The essence of the method

Many people who have experienced the properties of the paste on themselves claim that it really has a positive effect, reducing inflammation in the acne area with just one application.

This action is explained by the components included in the product.

The antiseptic substances in the paste help destroy microbes that cause inflammation in the pore. Anti-inflammatory components improve tissue regeneration and trophism.

But it should be borne in mind that the effect will be insignificant. A severely inflamed pimple will not disappear after using it.

Due to the complex effects of its constituent components, the use of paste can lead to :

  • narrowing of enlarged pores;
  • purification;
  • drying the inflamed surface.

Since no one has conducted targeted research, this effect has no scientific evidence.

In addition, the main problem that caused acne will still not be solved .

Allergy tests

If you decide to try using toothpaste as an auxiliary means of caring for your skin and its problem areas, then first test its effect on an inconspicuous small area. Apply a very small amount of paste in the evening to the area under the chin and under the ear. After some time, remove the paste using a cotton pad soaked in warm water. Carefully inspect the places where the unusual hygiene product was located. If the skin becomes red or, on the contrary, becomes very discolored, a burning sensation appears and it begins to peel, then this toothpaste cannot be used to treat skin problems. Even while the paste is on the skin, listen carefully to your sensations - an unpleasant burning, tingling, itching sensation should alert you. It is best to immediately remove the toothpaste and not use it for other purposes.

Can pregnant women use acne paste?

During the period of bearing a child, women are prohibited from consuming certain foods, using most cosmetic services, and taking certain medications. After all, the body undergoes colossal hormonal changes, so it can react to a familiar remedy in the most unpredictable way.

Pregnant women are often prone to developing rashes on the body and face.

This is due to:

  • an increase in the level of testosterone and progesterone in the blood, which helps to enhance the work of the sebaceous glands;
  • intense activity of the sebaceous ducts against the background of stress to which many expectant mothers are exposed during the most crucial period of life;
  • insufficient fluid intake, which leads to increased secretion of sebum.

When asked whether a expectant mother can use toothpaste if a pimple has popped up on her face, experts give a negative answer. The skin of a pregnant woman becomes hypersensitive and vulnerable, so it cannot normally withstand the aggressive effects of a hygiene product. As a treatment, it is better to make not a mask from toothpaste, but from vegetables and fruits, use herbal infusions and special creams.

Some rules and features

The difficulty in using toothpaste to care for facial skin is that no one can clearly say in what quantity it should be applied and how long to leave it on for an effective effect, because it is unusual to clean the skin of the face with toothpaste. Some people advise applying it directly to problem areas of the skin at night. But if you have sensitive skin, then within a few hours the paste can have a very negative effect and cause extensive irritation. If you want to use a paste to cleanse your face, use it for a short time to minimize any risk of skin damage. In addition, apply it directly to the problem area, being careful not to touch healthy skin.

Many of those who have used toothpaste to deal with skin inflammation believe that the paste must be left on for a sufficiently long time to be effective. But if the skin is sensitive, you should not do this, since instead of inflammation you can get severe irritation, which can again result in the development of an inflammatory process. Use this non-standard method only in emergency cases.

How does it help?

It blocks the access of air, thereby drying out the pimple. I think everyone has noticed that when a pimple is dried, it goes away much faster. This is due to the fact that without air, bacteria multiply less actively, therefore, if you have time to cut off oxygen to them, you can prevent severe inflammation on the face.

Which paste is suitable? Focus solely on sensations. I tried: mint, whitening, herbal, classic, there were no problems. But I still advise you to start with the classic one to see how the skin reacts. Everything is great in theory, but now let's look at it in practice.

Instructions for use

You need to apply any paste to the pimple and let it dry completely. You need to keep such a blot on your face for 30-40 minutes, during which time it will dry well and it will go away much faster.

Basic Rules:

  1. You need to apply it as soon as the pimple appears; if you apply it later, you won’t get a decent effect.
  2. It is not effective against subcutaneous acne, don’t waste your time!
  3. If you tried to apply pressure and a wound remained, then there is no point in applying the product after that.
  4. There is no effect on acne spots.

The main thing to remember is that as soon as redness appears, immediately apply a little paste to this area and the redness will go away.

Toothpaste for acne at night

Regarding the question, is it possible to leave it overnight? If your skin is normal (not dry), then feel free to leave it on. But, as a rule, 30-60 minutes are enough to remove the redness; if the redness does not disappear, it means that the pimple has already started, and you need to use something more powerful. I’ll tell you about such means at the end of the article.

Even if you have dry skin, if you leave it overnight, nothing bad will happen. The product does not clog pores and it is unlikely to remain on the skin at night.

Does it help with acne, my review

As you already know from the beginning of the article, my history of acne treatment is divided into two stages, but at the first stage there was little acne, so I didn’t even know about other remedies except paste :)

I applied it according to the above rules, and the acne went away very quickly. The redness instantly subsided, and the next day there was no trace left. But this didn’t work on all pimples! I noticed that even if you quickly applied it to a pimple that had just appeared, it was not always possible to remove the redness, and the pimple remained on the skin longer than usual.

These hard-to-treat acne was subcutaneous or, as they are also called colds. It’s good that at that time there weren’t so many of them popping up, so one such pimple didn’t cause much trouble.

I repeat, the main thing in using the paste is to apply it as soon as the pimple appears, otherwise you will not get the desired effect. Do not try to treat subcutaneous acne with it, it will not remove them, and then you will say that the product does not work.

Gradually, the second stage of acne began, more complex, when the face was sometimes simply covered with inflammation. I’ll tell you below how I treated it this time.

How to wash off the paste?

If you do decide to use toothpaste, applying it to small areas of the skin to cope with inflammation, pimples, blackheads and acne, then after some time you need to wash it off. This should be done with lukewarm water, rubbing the skin in a circular motion, or with your fingertips, or with a cotton pad. Once the paste is completely removed from the skin, rinse your face with cool water to help soothe the skin. Then pat your face dry with a clean towel and apply moisturizer.

What it is

This term suggests a symptom complex of secondary rashes. They appear after various forms of skin inflammation, pimples, and acne. Considering that its debut usually occurs in adolescence, the remaining traces pose a serious problem for youth and affect the psychological state of young people. If acne develops at an older age, the patient may also experience post-acne; treatment in this case is complicated by the general condition of the skin.

The consequences come in the following forms:

  • hyperpigmentation;
  • pathological scars;
  • atheromas;
  • milia (whiteheads).

Treatment and subsequent recovery of patients requires an integrated approach.

Daily washing

If you have tested for allergies to a specific type of toothpaste, tried to remove inflammation from the skin with its help, and you succeeded, then this paste can be used as a means for daily washing. Naturally, there is no need to squeeze the paste into your palm, smear it over your face, and then wash off this mask with water. If you need to use fairly harsh facial cleansing for a couple of days to get rid of acne, for example, then do so. Take a clean cup and squeeze out half a teaspoon of paste into it. Pour a small amount of water into the cup and mix well to obtain a homogeneous liquid mass. Wash your face with the resulting product, gently massaging it onto the skin. Carefully monitor your sensations - if a burning sensation begins, immediately rinse the paste with warm water. A one-time wash with an unusual product will not help get rid of the problem, but if you use it for two or three days, it will significantly improve the condition of the skin, especially if you also use medications to eliminate the problem.

After using a toothpaste-based cleanser, be sure to lubricate your skin with a nourishing or moisturizing cream.

Which product should I use?

In order not to harm the skin, it is necessary to use only certain pastes that meet the following requirements:

  • Only products that contain substances that can destroy microbes . These include: triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, soda.
  • reduce the symptoms of inflammation by using pastes that contain plant extracts. Particularly effective in this case are eucalyptus, chamomile, oak bark and sage.
  • Means must not contain dyes. The paste should be only white, without inclusions or stripes of a different color.
    Firstly, only it contains the maximum amount of antibacterial components.

    Secondly, dyes can cause skin irritation.

  • The product should not contain fluoride , as it is a strong allergen.

You should also avoid whitening toothpastes. They contain components that can cause skin burns and cause scarring. People with dark skin tones should be especially careful.

What else will help your skin be clean and free of inflammation?

Yes, many toothpastes contain active ingredients that have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and drying effects. This is exactly what inflamed skin that is prone to pimples, acne, and irritation needs. But as a cosmetic product, toothpaste is not the best option. It’s better to find a suitable product for yourself from a pharmacy or a specialized department of a cosmetics store. Such products will contain salicylic acid, extracts of some medicinal plants, and bioactive components. It is better to use special care products and medications than experiment with toothpaste. Remember that dental care product should only be used in an emergency.

Why does toothpaste help with acne?

To find out whether toothpaste helps against acne, just look at its composition.

The oral hygiene product contains:

  • Menthol, alcohol. They relieve swelling and redness, have a drying property, and prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Aluminum lactate. Stops the inflammatory process, narrows pores.
  • Hydrogen peroxide, triclosan. They inhibit the proliferation of pathogenic flora and draw out impurities from the pores.
  • Silica. Reduces signs of inflammation, heals minor damage to the integument.
  • Baking soda. Normalizes the pH of the skin, tightens pores, has an exfoliating effect, and relieves inflammation.
  • Chlorhexidine. Acts as an antiseptic, destroying pathogenic bacteria.
  • Allantoin. Reduces pain.
  • Bisabolol. It has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties.

Toothpaste may contain extracts of medicinal plants (aloe, chamomile, thyme, sage, oak bark, etc.). They perfectly reduce inflammation, dry the skin, destroy germs, and disinfect acne. If the product contains star anise, you can count on a reduction in the production of subcutaneous sebum, which is ideal for oily skin types.

The main thing is expert advice

If the problem of the external condition of the skin of the face and décolleté is a constant or regularly occurring problem for you, then to eliminate it you need to consult with a specialist - a dermatologist. In the vast majority of cases, this condition of the skin is caused by problems with the internal organs and systems of the human body. If necessary, the doctor will recommend consultation with specialized specialists - nutritionist, endocrinologist, hematologist. Only a specialist can prescribe oral medications - antibiotics, hormonal medications, sedatives. Medicinal plants, which are recommended by the attending physician, effectively help in solving skin problems.

Result after several procedures

The results of treating acne and other skin rashes can be seen after several procedures. Significantly reduces swelling of the area with formation, redness and size of inflammation.

When using the paste to eliminate acne marks, you may notice an initial change in the color of the affected area, which is associated with whitening properties. 2-3 applications are not enough to determine the effectiveness of the product.

Treatment of comedones should be comprehensive and regular, the final result of which can be assessed after a month of procedures.

Tea tree

Tea tree leaf extract has been known for its antibacterial properties for centuries. Today you can buy the oil of this plant in pharmacies and cosmetics stores. Apply it with a cotton swab to the problem area - redness or pimple. The oil will have the desired therapeutic effect, while allergies to its components occur in extremely rare cases.

Indications for use

Using toothpaste for the face in the form of a mask is possible in the following cases:

  • Against acne and pimples . The paste has bactericidal properties, destroying microorganisms that cause various rashes. In addition, the paste dissolves fats on the surface of the skin, which serve as a breeding ground for bacteria, and also reduces the secretion of the sebaceous glands.
  • Against blackheads . In this case, a paste with hard abrasive particles will do, or you can simply add baking soda as a substitute.
  • Facial cleansing . The principle is the same as with blackheads. In addition, the paste will help get rid of dead cells that prevent healthy skin from accessing oxygen and nutrients. The alcohol in the paste will dissolve fats and remove greasy shine.
  • Tonic . The paste perfectly nourishes and tones the skin. It helps to penetrate deep into the facial tissues when used in combination with other products in the mask. The skin of the face takes on a healthy and ruddy appearance thanks to menthol and essential oils.
  • Whitening and getting rid of freckles . The paste removes all pathologies on the face, brightening it and revealing healthy skin. At the same time, both freckles and other formations disappear. The pastes also contain special whitening components that will further enhance the effect.

Papaya

Papaya seed extract is a unique remedy for facial skin. It not only helps get rid of acne and redness, but has a rejuvenating effect due to its exfoliating effect, leaving the skin filled with radiance and freshness. This is a biological process carried out through the action of a specific enzyme, papain, which affects inactive protein bonds, causing them to disintegrate, due to which the removal of dead epithelial cells occurs.

How to quickly lighten or conceal

This is only possible if you use an effective integrated approach. That is, here it is necessary to combine competent home care and post-acne treatment from a cosmetologist, and you also need to take the necessary preventive measures.

Cosmetic and therapeutic products provide noticeable positive results, including:

  • retinol;
  • soft acids;
  • keratolytics;
  • natural ingredients, including badyagu and arnica.

However, they must be used with caution. Skin with acne scars is sensitive and needs delicate and competent care; active components of cosmetics can only aggravate the situation. In particular, it is important to remember that retinol is UV sensitive and should not be used if you plan to go out in the sun. That is why it is not recommended to get rid of this problem on your own, but should be done under the supervision and control of a doctor.

Is it possible to leave it overnight?

It is not recommended to leave the product on your face all night, because... it can cause itching, burning, redness and excessive dryness of the skin. If a pimple was discovered immediately before bed, and it is not possible to wait the recommended period of time, you can leave the product on overnight, taking the following precautions:

  • the composition is applied pointwise, healthy skin should not be touched;
  • It has been verified that there are no allergies to the components of the paste used.

Those with dry, sensitive skin should not leave the paste on their face overnight under any circumstances.

Where to start caring for a cosmetologist?

With skin cleansing (superficial and deep) depending on skin type, which is determined after examination through a magnifying glass.
Cleaning is carried out in several stages: cleansing with foam, disinfection with antiseptics, skin peeling, mechanical cleaning, applying a mask. The frequency of procedures is strictly individual and depends on the severity of the condition, skin type, season, effect of therapy and other factors. Typically, the course of treatment with timing and procedures is discussed at an appointment with a doctor. On average, facial cleansing is carried out once every 2-3-4 months. If this is a course of chemical peelings, then the procedure is usually carried out (also depending on the type of peeling) once every 2 weeks. A total of 3-5 procedures are required.

Perhaps a visit to a cosmetologist will not be enough; to combat acne you will have to involve other specialists: a dermatologist, gynecologist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist. Acne treatment should ideally begin with a diagnosis of the body. You will need to take a general blood test, a stool test for dysbacteriosis, microscopy of skin scrapings and a number of other studies.
